1. What are the common types of LCDs used in today's market?

There are two types of LCDs commonly used in today's market. One is TN (twist nematic) that has a 90 degree viewing angle. The other is STN (super-twist nematic) that has a 180 degree viewing angle.

2. How many types of display methods are there for LCDs?

Basically, there are three types of display methods.

      A) Segment type (7 segments, 14 segments, or 16 segments)

      B) Dot Matrix type

      C) Graphical type

4. How many types of lighting methods (viewing modes) are there for LCDs?

There are three types of lighting methods: reflective, transmissive, and transflective. Reflective LED displays use a reflector panel behind the LCD to bounce back ambient light and is thus best for daytime use or in places with strong indoor lighting. Transmissive LCD displays use only a backlight and are best for nighttime use or in buildings or other areas where there is no significant light source. Transflective LCD displays use a transflector (polarizer) behind the unit to reflect ambient light in addition to allowing a backlight to pass through making it the most popular type of lighting method as it is viewable in any conditions.

5. Is temperature a matter of concern for an LCD display?

Yes. Since LCD displays are now used so broadly, some of their applications will be used in very cold weather thus requiring a wide temperature range in the unit. Normally, the wide range of temperature for a TN type LCD is -30~75C (operation temperature) and -40~80C (storage temperature). For STN, the range is -20 ~70C (operation temperature) and -30~70 (storage temperature).

6. What is the thickness of the glass that covers an LCD display?

There are three different thicknesses of glass used in LCDs. They are 1.1mm, 0.7mm, and 0.5mm. The most common thickness used is 1.1mm.

7. How many types of driving methods are there for an LCD display?

There are two types of driving modes for LCD displays. One is "Static" and the other is "Multiplexed." Staic is a method of activating an LCD where each segment has an independent connection. The Multiplexed method is one where the LCD is driven via different channels. The Multiplexed method requires additional information defining "Duty" and "Bias." For example, 1/2 duty, 1/4 bias defines an 8x1 LCD display.

8. How does GEI LCD define viewing direction?

We use four different easy directions for LCD viewing: 3 io'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, and 12 o'clock. 3 o'clocl viewing means the LCD is viewed from the left side, 6 o'clock viewing from the bottom, 9 o'clock from the right, and 12 from the top. 6 o'clock is the most common viewing direction (calculators, note books, other hand-held devices, etc.).
